The EastWind Labs manage several portfolios in energy management. We provide solutions in the following areas:
Preamble
The Nigerian electric power situation has become a national embarrassment characterized by brown-outs, black-outs, or plain unavailability. This situation has fueled the underdevelopment of the nation, as the industrial sector activities can no longer be sustained on power from the grid.
Currently, the manufacturing sector runs on diesel or gasoline powered generators- a hefty bill that is passed onto the consumers. This of course translates into high cost of locally manufactured goods which cannot compete against their imported versions.
The residential sector has also been affected as the quality of life slipped away due to lack of electricity for basic living.
As a work-around this deplorable situation, the electricity feeding national development shifted from hundred percent grid-based to one that is largely self generated. This self generated electricity comes mainly from diesel and gasoline generators. It is not only expensive but noisy and polluting.
In addressing this endemic power problem, the EastWind Labs is looking at Renewable Energy solutions particularly from Solar PV. Our solutions are off-grid systems and grid-tied systems with battery backup.
The potential for this solution is as enormous as the population of the nation. This is somewhat estimated to be in the region of 100,000-130,000 MW. The total installed generation capacity is about 4000MW or 7000 MW if new capacities scheduled to come on stream around 2009 are factored into the equation.
However ambitious the government interventions are, the more important figure is the capacity available after transmission and distribution losses. This is a meager 2600 MW serving 140 Million people. This figure of 19 watts per capita, puts the nation among one of the least developed nations in the world. This is both an unfortunate situation and a market opportunity. The EastWind Labs have chosen to see and plug into the opportunity. The solutions proffered in this material are two-fold: Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency. The figures used in the calculations are the current figures on energy efficient appliances. That is why we chose CFL lighting appliances rather than incandescent lamps, motion and occupancy sensors.
